The GLA-Class is the latest crossover vehicle from German luxury car manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz. Not as big as SUVs, but more spacious and practical than sedans, crossovers seem to be the next big thing in terms of body styles. Mercedes-Benz launched the faster, sportier and more powerful (and more insane!) AMG-tuned version of this car earlier and now, they have launched the more sedate version as well. Read on to find out what you need to know about the new GLA.
Powertrain and Performance
Happily, the GLA crossover is available with both diesel and petrol engine options. The petrol motor is a 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder, turbocharged petrol unit that puts out 181 bhp. Driving the petrol version of the GLA is a breeze with overtaking being effortless and the 0-100 kph dash being dispatched in just over 8 seconds. On the other hand, the diesel version of the GLA-Class gets a 2.2 litre, 4 cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that produces a power output of 135 bhp. On both these cars, the power is channelled to the wheels via a 7 speed, dual clutch automatic gearbox. While it may not suit aggressive driving, it does the job perfectly well while driving around on city roads.
Build and Styling
This is one department where the GLA-Class definitely shines. From every angle, the crossover looks beefy, muscular and purposeful. At the front, there is a bold front grille with two chrome bands, more chrome encapsulating the air dam, new generation headlamp clusters, attractive 18 inch alloys and a sculpted bonnet. Walk round to the back and you get more of the same striking design. There are well-designed tail lamps, a skid plate and a wide strip of chrome that connects the two taillights. On the inside, fit and finish is excellent and so is the quality of materials used. The feature list is quite extensive as well, including a panoramic sunroof, satellite navigation, ambient interior lighting, a sound system from Harman Kardon, tyre pressure monitoring, a reversing camera, power adjustable front seats, bi-xenon projector headlamps and 7 airbags. Rear seat entertainment systems are available as part of optional equipment.
Mercedes-Benz has pulled out all the stops to ensure that this car will be a success and it certainly seems like it will be. Customers can choose between petrol and diesel models, it looks fantastic, it is built very well and it has got loads of features. It is available only with an automatic transmission but that will not be a deterrent to the vast majority of its potential customers. All in all, the pros of the GLA-Class outweigh its cons and Mercedes-Benz has a very capable car in its ranks.
