Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Review

By   |  September 1, 2015

Mercedes-Benz has taken what is widely regarded all across the globe as one of the most luxurious cars on Earth, the S-Class, and increased its luxury quotient to such a level that it now competes with names such as Rolls Royce and Bentley! The car that has made this possible is the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and it is now available in India in two guises: the S600 and the S500.

Powertrain and Performance

The Mercedes-Maybach S500 comes with a 4.7 litre, twin turbocharged V8 petrol engine that delivers 453 bhp. If that is too small and underpowered for your tastes, you can buy the bigger Maybach S600 which is equipped with a 6.0 litre, V12 petrol engine that has its power output boosted by two turbochargers to a stellar 523 bhp. Put the car into Sport mode and you can do the 0-100 kph sprint in 4.8 seconds. However, this engine is not loud at all when driving sensibly and even the vibration it creates is barely noticeable. Power is transferred to the wheels via a 7 speed automatic transmission in the S600 and a 9 speed automatic gearbox in the S500. The suspension has been tuned to provide that extra bit of comfort and it is helped by the Magic Body Control feature, which scans the road ahead and prepares the suspension and plans gear changes ahead to make the ride quality as smooth as possible.

Build and Styling

This is where the Mercedes-Maybach really comes into its element. The car is longer than the standard S-Class by 207mm and almost all of it seems to have been used to improve space for the rear seat occupants. The seats can be reclined to 43.5 degrees, heated or cooled and have powered full length footrests. You even get Maybach cushions, silver-plated champagne flutes and a hot stone massaging system. Other features that set it apart from traditional luxury cars include a 1540 watt sound system by Burmester, 12 airbags including the new inflatable seat belts called beltbags that are designed to minimise injuries to the ribcage and collarbones, an atomizing air filter that pumps perfumed air currents within the passenger cabin and an interior clock by IWC Schaffhausen. You also (obviously) get the usual high end features such as a panoramic sunroof that can be tinted using a button, 4 zone automatic climate control, state-of-the-art rear seat entertainment system with remote control and headphones, tray tables that fold out from the rear central tunnel, a 360 degree camera, night vision and mood lighting, amongst others.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class really does push the outside of the envelope when it comes to luxury, comfort and futuristic features. Despite its opulent and lavishly appointed interiors, this car still manages to look discreet on the outside, a fact that many of its owners might appreciate. But the absolute best part about the Mercedes-Maybach is this: it is and does everything that is expected of a super luxury sedan but, it costs significantly lesser than its rivals. Even if you are a multi-millionaire, you have got to love sensible pricing!
