New Renault Koleos 2014 Test Drive Review

Q. What is it?

This is the blink-and-miss facelifted Renault Koleos which was shown at the Auto Expo and now you can buy one with a starting price of Rs 21.29 lakh for the base 4x2 MT but the question is should you? The Renault Koleos with this facelift attempts to inject some freshness into this SUV and Renault hopes this facelift will increase sales of this SUV. Lets see if they are right on that count.

Q. Looks nice eh?

Yes it does but in a funky sort of way. Its no butch SUV and surely lacks the oomph of something like the Hyundai Santa Fe but go beyond that and you will warm to its futuristic styling. The styling details include new chrome front grille stylish chrome side protectors, silver satin roof rails, LED equipped indicators on door mirrors and new 17 inch two tone alloy wheels. The grille sort of goes along with the styling of this Renault SUV and the alloys also look cool. The rear styling is similar as it was before and overall this is a SUV to buy if you want to stand out from the crowd.

Q. How are things inside?

Again there are hardly any changes inside the 2014 Koleos but the overall cabin is a nice place to be even if ultimately is not class best in terms of luxury. The materials, fit and finish is quite good and Renault has given it features like dual zone automatic air conditioning with rear vents, Bose sound system, powered driver & passenger seats plus nice bits like tray tables at the rear.

Space though is average and rear seat space could have been better plus remember there is no third row seaing. However more than sitting at the back this SUV is for driving and again it looks different from others which makes it unique and sort of appealing.

Q. How does it drive?

The bit that matters and here Renault have improved it the most with the 170 bhp 2.0 diesel which is 23 bhp more than the previous version. There is also a healthy 320Nm of torque and which means performance is quite good. It does very well on the highway and driving at triple digit speeds is easy plus its feels quite sure-footed. In the city the 6-speed autobox exposes the turbolag and you need to drive it in manual model all the time to extract power.

The 6-speed manual is more like it and we liked it better than the auto as the shoft action is smooth and the clutch resonably light. The Koleos 2014 4x2 does not come with AT but the 4x4 comes with a MT along with the AT option. The ride just like the previous version was excellent but in the handling department there is some body-roll in the corners.

Q. Verdict?

The facelifted 2014 Koleos 4x2 MT version is priced at Rs 21.29 lakh while the 4x4 MT is Rs 23.97 lakh and the top of the line 4x4 AT is Rs 24.97 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Its better value now but it remains to be seen if it can be a sales success in the presence of tough competition. The Koleos has always been a SUV that makes you stand out from the crowd and this one is no different.
