Top 5 Things To Know About the 2014 Tata Aria

Tata Aria despite being a good product has been misunderstood in our Indian car market till date. Now, after four years of its presence in our market, Tata has done some major changes to this car for the first time. Will these changes be enough for this car to get the status and respect in our market which company thinks it deserves? We find out.

Take a look at front and changes are quite evident, the addition of smoked projector lamps surely adds to the sporty look of this car. In the black colour of our test car, it looked really impressive and aggressive when seen from the front. The double barrel lamps, massive chrome grille and sharp lines on bonnet together make a good combination and adds dynamism to this tall and heavy looking car.

The size of Aria is best visible when seen from either side as it sits high on 17 inches wheel and looks quite bulky. The rear end of Aria features twin chrome finished tail pipes and newly added clear lens in its tail lights which makes it look slightly fresh than before.

The wide opening doors make it easy for you to get in and out of this seven seater car. There is no change in the interior colors of this car though as it continues to features the dual tone purple and black colored interiors which surely look a bit different and appealing. Quality inside has been improved however it still needs some more.

If it's about space then give full marks to Tata because that's what they often do the best. The front seats are big and comfortable enough to digest full size drivers while there is generous amount of space in the second row as well. Thigh support and back support makes you feel home if you plan to take it on long journeys. Knee room might only be an issue for those who will sit in the third row as its seats are placed quite low and leaves less space for you to move at the back.

The boot can only carry couple of bags if all seats are occupied but if all these occupants are fond of carrying different set of sunglasses and other bits then everyone has their own utility flip on storage spaces which 'decorates' the entire roof.

The only new addition is the bigger and improved Harman infotainment system with rear parking camera in the top variant (useful when parking this behemoth). The system is also equipped with navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity which can only be used to make calls but not to stream music. Steering mounted controls, automatic climate controls, cruise controls, leather seats, leather wrapped steering wheel and auto folding mirrors are also some of the features of this car. List of safety features includes 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP and Traction control system.

Engine and Performance

Apart from these changes, Tata has also re-tuned the 2.2L, four cylinder Varicor diesel engine to generate 10 bhp more than before. It now produces 148bhp @4000rpm with similar torque amount of 320Nm as before.

The engine now also feels more refined and is less audible even if you rev it hard. There is slight turbo lag below 2000rpm which vanishes smoothly and further gives you predictable power delivery. 0-100km/hr is done in around 15 seconds in 2 wheel drive mode. The gearbox though bulky is easy to use and the clutch is light as well.

The car can return you a mileage of around 10-12km/ltr. The ride quality is also quite impressive as it sails over potholes and uneven roads quite smoothly and feels quite settle. Straight line stability is far better than its cornering abilities because its heavy steering and extended rear overhang causes body roll around corners which needs special attention at high speeds.

The updated Aria is available in three variants out of which only the Pride variant features the four wheel drive system which is priced at INR 14.74lakhs while the base, Pure and middle variant, Pleasure is priced at INR 9.95lakhs and 12lakhs respectively (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi).

The ride quality, spacious cabin and improved performance are surely the key characteristics of new Aria but it remains to seen whether if these qualities would be enough for buyers to choose this car over others.
