The global best-seller of last year, the Toyota Corolla, is in its next generation. The new Corolla Altis now has more competitors than ever to beat in our market to claim the top position in its segment. Toyota claims the new gen version of the Corolla is better than any of its previous generations and hopes big for this car in every type of automotive market around the globe, including India. What's so special about this car? Read on.

Powertrain & Performance

Technically, if we only talk about specifications, then the new-gen Corolla Altis is similar to its predecessor as it retains both its engines from the previous generation vehicle, which includes a 1.8L petrol unit and a smaller 1.4L diesel engine. The petrol unit now gets some new technology from Toyota, namely the Acoustic Controlled Induction System which helps this new car to move faster at lower engine speeds. This makes city drivability much easier and more fun than before. This particular technology is based on a flap which opens up and modifies the air flow leading to enhanced performance. This 1.8L, 4-cylinder, DOHC engine pumps out a power output of 138 bhp at 6400 RPM, giving you a wide power-band to play with. The maximum torque output of this engine is 172.5 Nm which is available at 4000 RPM. Another piece of good news is the addition of the 7-speed CVT transmission to this engine which will also attract a different set of buyers looking for a powerful automatic car. Also available in new Altis is the 1.4L turbo diesel engine generating a maximum power and torque output of 87 bhp and 205 Nm, available at 3800 RPM and 2800 RPM respectively. This engine is only mated to a six-speed manual gearbox which offers impressive half throttle responses making it a good city car.

Build & Styling

The new car wears a completely new skin which makes it look much more aerodynamic and lively than before. The heavily chromed and extended front grille and twin barrel angular headlamps gives it a very premium look which makes it look one of the most attractive cars in its class. The top model also comes with daytime running LEDs. Rear LED tail lights also come standard in this car. The wide chrome bar at the back gels really well with the heavily pronounced rear styling of the Corolla Altis which completely differentiates it from other cars. The new 16 inch alloy wheels and bulged wheel arches also give it a muscular side stance which was very much missing in the previous car. Step inside the car and you will be glad to see the fresh and appealing dual tone colour interiors with the usage of upmarket materials and fabrics. Toyota has stretched the wheelbase of this car by good 100mm, which gives you incredible leg room inside this car. The new Altis also gets the first in class rear inclining seats which helps you to get in a much more relaxed position while travelling on long routes. As far as comfort features are concerned, the car gets front and rear centre armrests with controls in the rear armrest, a fully automatic climate control, rain sensing wipers, push button start, paddle shifters and integrated touch pad system. This touch pad system also has controls of other functions as well since it also comes with Bluetooth connectivity and a navigation system. Other features include steering mounted controls, electrically adjustable driver's seat and outside mirrors which are also electrically heated. The new Corolla is now much safer than before as Toyota has added significant amount of safety features to this car. The car gets safety features like disc brakes on all wheels and ABS with EBD and Brake Assist. Apart from these, the car gets a collapsible steering wheel, reverse parking camera with sensors, front dual airbags and front and side impact beams.

The new Toyota Corolla is a big leap forward from its forerunner in many ways. The car looks more mature and better from every angle and this isn——t limited only to the exteriors. The interiors of the new car look and feel excellent and house a lot of features and equipment. Toyota has realised that the segment that the Corolla Altis sits in is one that is bearing witness to exponential growth and the company has, in time, refreshed their contender to take on some really powerful rivals. So, is the new Corolla Altis better than the outgoing one? Definitely. But is it so good that it can become the next segment leader? Possibly not. Nevertheless, make no mistake, as an overall package, this new sedan is a fantastic vehicle.
