Toyota Corolla Altis Performance Review

Powertrain & Performance

The Altis comes with seven variants: 1.8J, 1.8G, 1.8GL, 1.8VL and 1.8G (CVT), Aero-Petrol LE in petrol engines, Aero-Diesel, D-4D J, D-4D G and D-4D G (L) with diesel engines. It sports two engines - 1.8L petrol and 1.4L diesel. The 1.8L petrol engine is improved and powerful, compared to its predecessor. This engine comes with Dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i) that dispenses 131 bhp @ 6400 rpm and a maximum torque of 173 Nm @ 4000 rpm. Toyota's Dual VVT-i technology optimises valve timing by regulating air intake and exhaust timings to deliver potent torque at low and mid-range engine rotations. The engine computes the throttle demand and produces considerable torque during passing, cruising, and idling, keeping the fuel consumption nominal. The Dual VVT-i technology allows for extra smooth acceleration and makes driving the Altis extremely enjoyable. The newly introduced 1.4L diesel engine for Corolla is the tried and tested with D-4D I-4 technology which also is used in Toyota Fortuner and Innova models. The 1.4L diesel engine pumps out 87.1 bhp of power and 205 Nm of torque. With this engine Toyota claims it can tilt the game to its side with the engine returning with economical figures of 21.45 kmpl.

Power is transferred to the front wheels with a refined 6-speed manual transmission for 1.8J, 1.8G and 1.8GL variants. A 7-speed automatic transmission with super CVT comes as standard for the top-end 1.8VL and 1.8G (CVT) variant. Ergonomically designed interiors and seating ensure a comfortable drive. McPherson Strut front and Torsion beam rear suspension set-up provide improved geometry and eminence to the Altis. The sedan is outfitted with an Electronic Power Steering (EPS) that offers efficient and easy handling at any given speed.
